GUZZLER NEWS

JANUARY 2009
bIG gUZZLER .
The Big Guzzler!  Our most recent addition to the fleet is substantial and is capable of increased suction capabilities.  With a massive engine and blower capable of in excess of 100m of vertical suction with little thought given to leachate heads.  This is as accessible as the current rigid guzzlers but will increase productivity on those sites with more challenging conditions.  This has already been on hire removing silts from 60m deep wells with leachate heads in excess of 20m.  The blower is 10,000cfm and is run off a Volvo Penter engine.  It also has a large debris tank which results in less downtime for tipping.  It also sucks wet and dry - leaving no material safe!  Watch this space for more updates on this Guzzler!

cell  CCTV - Chambers in decline
The importance of CCTV for ongoing maintenance and leachate compliance has been well documented and many of our Clients use the service on a regular basis.  However what has also become apparent from viewing literally thousands of wells is the construction details of wells and how the verticality and integrity of these are affected over a period of time.  Across many Clients sites there are generally standard modes of failure noted within the wells.  HDPE construction wells do not have any particular depth of failure but they do demonstrate a type of spectacle failure normally associated with insufficient bedding or surround in civil engineering.  With regards to concrete ring construction the modes of failure are again, not surprisingly, attributable to large stresses applied to the base causing problems with misalignment and verticality, which over a period of time then creates instability in the overall structure causing complete collapse.   Poor construction of leachate chambers is uneconomic and inefficient for the ongoing operation of a commercially sound landfill. Monitoring of these chambers on a regular basis can identify to Clients any unexpected movements or changes to the structural nature of these wells. Please note that as required by the DSEAR Regs all our CCTV equipment is ATEX rated. If you are interested in learning more about our CCTV services, please call.

 Get your ROCS off!!
Current Renewable Obligation Certificates (ROCs) are now allowing advanced gasification plants to qualify for ROCs, which increases the potential for alternatives to landfilling, therefore contributing to the The Waste Strategy targets of waste to landfill being reduced by 30% by 2010 (defra factsheet).  In addition from April this year the Government will be offering double ROCs for advanced gasification plants. Statements made to the New Energy Focus intimated that bidding for non-recyclable waste may result in this waste being worth £200-£300/tonne!

However these schemes will typically take 5 years upwards from conception to commissioning and are likely to be sensitive with regards to planning considerations. These incentives by the government and the increased landfill tax burden ( defra - will have increased to £48/t in 2010/11) are more likely to generate income for the government rather than increase the change from landfill to alternatives as the alternatives have to be in place for there to be a clear option. This can possibly be ratonalised by the steady production of construction/demolition waste produced - around 90million t/annum.  However landfilling of this sector increased by 28MT to landfill (5%) increase and decreased by 8% - 15MT for that being taken to exempt sites.  Many would say this is as a direct result of planning issues- at local government level-  in obtaining exempt sites - but at a tax levy of £2.00/t there are other incentives I imagine.
